Screenplay Writing: Sample Screenplay
To help you visualize correct screenplay format, here is an excerpt from Duck Duck Goose rewritten as a short stand alone screen play.
FADE IN:
EXT. STREET -NIGHT
Dressed to impress, DORA and BROPHY pass shops which are
closed for the evening as they stroll along a downtown
sidewalk.
DORA
So what's the plan, man?
BROPHY
Tonight we get some culture.
DORA
Culture as in art, or culture
as in yogurt?
BROPHY
Culture as in poetry.
DORA
(mock dread)
Should I have worn my black
beret?
BROPHY
I hate to say it, but the
beatniks may laugh at you.
DORA
Honey, when you and I walk in
a room side by side people
don't laugh at me ... they
laugh near me. Nice tie by
the way.
BROPHY
Hey, this is my lucky tie. My
chick magnet tie.

BROPHY (CONT'D)
I'll have you know I've been
bound to many a bedpost with
this tie.
Dora jolts to a stop and looks at him. After a beat, she
snorts a laugh and walks on.
BROPHY (CONT'D)
That could have been true. You
don't know.
CUT TO:
EXT. POETRY BAR -NIGHT
A sign out front reads "Poetry Readings: Open Mic."
Gathered out front are a few POETS, wearing black and
mumbling to themselves as they rehearse poetry in near
silent monologs.
DORA
Look, it's a great tie. I was
kidding. Jeez you're a freak
tonight. Now, let's go inside
and drink a whole lotta beer.
She pauses just long enough to ensure Brophy has been
placated.
DORA (CONT'D)
If they let you in with that tie.
She walks into the bar, laughing. Head shaking, Brophy
follows her in.
FADE OUT.
